Author, minister and cyclist

It’s January 2nd, 2025, and we’re just embarking on our Bible reading plan for the year. If this is your first time reading through the Bible, it’s easy to miss the overall storyline of Scripture when you jump from Genesis to Ezra to Matthew and then to Acts. It’s natural for beginners to feel a bit lost or overwhelmed when considering the Bible’s size and extensive history. That’s why we’re doing this together!

Teaching the Bible in the classroom for several years has allowed me to discover many valuable resources that help my students see the broader picture of Scripture. One of those resources is The Bible Project. The Bible Project provides short animated book overviews, along with other various studies. You’ll find the following resources helpful.

How to Read the Bible Series

Both newbies and season veterans will gain from watching The Bible Project’s foundational series on reading the Bible. They provide an introduction to the Bible and give insights on how to read the various genres of literature found in God’s Word. You can find these resources by clicking here.

Book Overviews

For me, the book overviews at The Bible Project are extremely helpful when reading or studying a book of the Bible. I used them in the classroom and in studying for my sermon series. They give you a bird’s-eye view of each book, giving you a road map to follow. Here are the links to each of the books covered so far in our reading program.

Genesis 1-11 and Genesis 12-50

Ezra (and Nehemiah)

Matthew

Acts

A Helpful Book or Two

Finally, I have found Gordan D. Fee and Douglas Stuart’s How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth series also useful. The first book is deals more with how to interpret Scripture (hermeneutics) and the second serves as a guided tour through the books of the Bible. Here are the links.

Conclusion

Hopefully, all this information is useful. Let me know in the comments which resource brought you the most value. If you have questions, leave those in the comments too. There’s still time to grab a friend—spread the word on social media and invite them to join us!
